Techno | Made In Singapore
I read in the Straits Times yesterday, 7th June 2006 about an ingenious invention from a local company called Bak2U.com.
It has created a "stealth" software that tracks stolen or lost cell phone, well at least for now a PDA phone.
The booth was at the recently ended PC Show 2006 at Suntec City. It sold over 120 copies of its software and picked up interests from companies from Europe and the Middle East.
The owner has to install Bak2U program into his or hers PDA phone that has Windows Mobile 2000 or higher to work.
If the phone gets lost or stolen, the founder who decides to keep it or rather the thief would normally throw away the owner's SIM card and insert his or her own SIM card.
Upon power on, the PDA phone will secretly sends an SMS to a predefined cell phone the owner had pre-programmed.
The owner can then either call back to the "finder" or thief to ask his or her phone back, else report the finder's or thief's cell phone details from the SMS to the police.
The SMS acts as an evidence. Since all SIM cards are registered to the local telcos, to trace the "finder" or thief is really quite easy, given that Singapore is such a small island.
Quite ingenious, and kudos to the local inventor. An Indian invention from Micro Technologies goes even further, it tells the owner the cell phone's approximate location.
Nonethelss, this is proudly Made In Singapore.
